At Dignus Group, we believe that behind every behaviour is communication – and behind every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

At Chance Drive, one person’s journey over the past year has powerfully demonstrated what can happen when consistency, understanding and collaboration replace crisis and conflict.

The Journey & The Challenge

When J first arrived at Chance Drive, she was in a highly distressed and unsettled place.

Her behaviours of concern were frequently directed at team members. She could be combative and physically aggressive, often acting in ways that placed herself and others at risk. She attempted to access cleaning fluids, washing liquids and kitchen knives. Everyday environments required high levels of restriction, and team members were focused primarily on managing risk.

It was a difficult and intense period – for her and for the team supporting her.

What quickly became clear, however, was that these behaviours were not simply “challenging.” They were communication issues. She needed safety, validation and boundaries – and, most importantly, a space where she felt heard.

What needed to change was not just her behaviour, but the environment around her.

The Approach & Team Effort

The team at Chance Drive responded with patience, structure and specialist collaboration.

She received input from a Learning Disability Nurse, who worked alongside her to explore past trauma and better understand what her behaviours were communicating. Sensory assessments were completed to identify environmental triggers and create a calmer, more regulated living space.

At the same time, the staff team committed to consistency. Clear boundaries were established and maintained. Responses to behaviours became predictable, calm and therapeutic rather than reactive.

Instead of working against the behaviours, the team began working with her.

Regular professional reviews showed measurable improvement. Although behaviours of concern have not disappeared entirely, they are no longer directed at team members. The shift in dynamic has been profound – interactions are now relational rather than confrontational.

This progress has been a truly collaborative effort between the Chance Drive team and external professionals, all working toward a shared goal: safety, stability and independence.

The Impact & Outcomes

Today, the difference is striking.

The relationship between her and the team has become therapeutic and trusting. Team members are no longer simply managing behaviours – they are supporting her to understand them, express herself differently and develop coping strategies.

Most significantly, her independence has grown.

She now maintains her own bungalow – keeping it clean and tidy. She helps with cooking and daily living tasks. Where once she could not safely access cleaning products or kitchen utensils, she now uses them appropriately as part of her everyday life.

She has moved from restriction to responsibility.

The environment that once required constant management is now a space she takes ownership of.

A Team Reflection

Reflecting on the journey, the team identify one key factor above all else: consistency.

“Providing that consistency and safe space has allowed her to take ownership of her environment and her daily living skills rather than having everything done for her. We’re no longer working from a point of combat – we’re working in conjunction with her. It’s collaborative now.”

That collaboration – between team members and the person they support – is where the real transformation lies.

Brave Decisions. Better Lives.

This journey at Chance Drive is a reminder that positive change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, specialist input, reflection and unwavering consistency.

But when teams commit to understanding the person behind the behaviour, incredible progress is possible.

At Dignus Group, this is what Brave decisions. Better lives. looks like in action.
