When Perry Higgins joined Dignus ten years ago, he was looking for more than just a job. He wanted an opportunity to make a genuine difference in people’s lives. What he found was an organisation whose values matched his own and a place where he could build a meaningful career.
Looking back, Perry remembers being drawn to Dignus because of the way people were supported and the emphasis placed on helping both colleagues and the people we support to grow.
“I’ve always wanted to make a difference to people’s lives. When I joined Dignus, I could see that the way they provided care aligned with how I believed care should be delivered.”
Growing Together
Over the last decade, Perry has seen many changes. Processes that were once paper-based are now digital, technology has improved safety and communication, and greater access to transport has opened up more opportunities for the people we support to participate in activities further afield.
But while the organisation has evolved, one thing has remained the same: the culture.
For Perry, the support and encouragement from managers and colleagues has been a big part of what has kept him at Dignus for so long.
“The management have always been encouraging. They make you feel valued and appreciated for the job you do. Nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes, but I’ve always felt supported to learn and get things right.”
Brave Decisions in Everyday Moments

For him, brave decisions aren’t always big, life-changing moments. Often, they’re the everyday choices that put the needs and wishes of the people we support first.
He recalls an occasion when plans for a group activity needed to change at the last minute because one person no longer wanted to take part. Rather than insisting on sticking to the original plan, Perry listened, adapted and found an alternative that worked for everyone.
“You need to make decisions in the best interests of the people we support. Sometimes just listening and changing direction can completely change the outcome for somebody.”
There have also been moments when quick thinking and decisive action have made a critical difference. Perry shared one incident where he intervened during a serious choking episode, helping to ensure a person received urgent medical attention when it mattered most.
More Than a Career
One of the most striking reflections from Perry’s ten years is that supporting people doesn’t just change their lives – it changes yours too.
Through the people he has supported, Perry has discovered new hobbies, learned new skills and built lasting relationships.
“I’ve benefited a lot from the people we support as well. They taught me how to play snooker and even how to fish. It’s a win-win situation. You give, and you receive as well.”
Looking Ahead
After a decade with Dignus, Perry remains as passionate about support work as the day he started. His commitment, compassion and belief in doing the right thing for the people we support embodies everything Dignus stands for.
When asked how he would describe Dignus, his answer was simple:
“It’s a company that knows exactly where it’s going and genuinely values the people we care for.”
Ten years of service is an incredible achievement, and we’re proud to celebrate Perry’s contribution. His story is a reminder that great support is built on relationships, trust and a genuine desire to help people live the lives they choose.
