At Dignus Group, we believe that every person deserves the chance to live a full and meaningful life – no matter how complex their needs may be. This belief is what drives our approach to truly personalised care and our ethos of “Brave decisions. Better lives.”
The journey of RY, a person supported at Carisbrooke, reflects this commitment in action. Through patience, collaboration, and creative thinking, the team helped RY achieve stability, confidence, and a renewed connection with his community – after previous providers had struggled to meet his needs.
Challenges and Approach
When RY first joined the service, he displayed behaviours that could pose serious risks to himself and others. One particular behaviour – head-locking – was complex, as it often occurred both in moments of distress and happiness. Despite his affectionate intentions, RY’s height and strength meant that this could result in staff injury.
In his previous placement, these challenges led to significant restrictions, including not being able to access the community except for essential appointments. The environment had become reactive rather than supportive.
At Dignus Group, we took a different approach.
“We recognised that his behaviour wasn’t about aggression – it was about communication and sensory needs,” explains the Carisbrooke Home Manager. “So instead of reducing his world, we looked for ways to expand it safely.”
With the support of PBS UK and working with our specialist in-house trainer, the team introduced new strategies focused on understanding and meeting RY’s sensory needs. Team members received specialist training and practical guidance on how to safely offer deep-pressure hugs – helping RY feel secure and connected, while reducing the risk of harm.
His staffing ratio was increased from 2:1 to 3:1, ensuring both safety and flexibility for community activities. Most importantly, the team committed to continuing daily community engagement, even when challenges arose.
“RY goes out every day now – trying new things, exploring new places. Not every trip goes perfectly, but every experience is a chance to learn. Every step forward is a win, and we keep moving with purpose and resilience.”.”
Collaboration with Professionals
Central to RY’s progress has been a strong partnership between Dignus Group and external professionals. The team worked closely with PBS UK, social workers, and court of protection representatives to ensure consistent, transparent communication.
“PBS UK have been fantastic – observing shifts, joining us in the community, and debriefing with the team afterwards,” the Home Manager said. “They give feedback, share ideas, and also celebrate what’s going well. It’s helped the whole team grow in confidence.”
The collaborative approach has led to a shared understanding of RY’s needs and a more unified plan of support – one that focuses on strengths, not restrictions. Visiting professionals have repeatedly commented on the positive transformation they’ve witnessed since RY’s move to Dignus Group.
“They’ve seen him engaging, being more independent, and living a fuller life. That’s the biggest reward.”
Positive Outcomes and Impact
Since joining Dignus Group, RY has shown a significant reduction in behaviours that challenge and a marked increase in engagement and independence.
He continues to enjoy regular community access, even when incidents occur – a clear reflection of the team’s bravery and belief in positive risk-taking.
The Carisbrooke team maintain open communication, reflects on lessons learned, and celebrates successes together – ensuring a culture of learning, not fear.
“Our ethos is simple,” says the Home Manager. “We take positive risks. We don’t give up. Everyone deserves the right to be happy, to be part of the community, and to try new things.”
Looking Ahead
RY’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when care is led by understanding, compassion, and collaboration. By choosing to see beyond behaviours and focus on potential, the Carisbrooke team have helped RY rediscover confidence, connection, and joy.
At Dignus Group, we’re proud of the brave decisions our teams make every day –decisions that lead to better lives for the people we support.
